Simple Tips To Keep Your Home Appliances Working Great And Lasting Longer

Appliances benefit our lives in many ways, but they are also costly. That’s why we should do everything we can to help ensure that our appliances stay in good working order and last a long time. Here are some tips to help keep your appliances working great and lasting longer.

Don’t Overload

First, avoid cramming your appliances with too many items. For example, the refrigerator can often harbor uneaten, spoiled leftovers, causing us to have to cram fresh groceries in and end up with a completely stuffed refrigerator. A full refrigerator is forced to work too hard because the air is unable to freely circulate. Washing machines are another appliance that is frequently overloaded. If we cram in too many clothes into the washing machine we could end up breaking the belt right in the middle of washing a load of clothes. This leads to both inconvenience and added expense for repairs. Dishwashers are another appliance that tends to break down and get worn out from people cramming too many dishes into the washer. It makes more sense to leave dishes in the sink for the next load than it does to cram them all in at once and end up with a broken dishwasher or dishes that are not completely clean.

Protect From Harsh Elements

It’s important to protect your appliances from the elements. For example, consider your air conditioner. These handy devices are a great way to stay cooled during the hot days of summer. However, did you know you can increase the efficiency and longevity of your air conditioner unit by covering it with a custom air conditioner cover? A custom air conditioner cover can be found in a large variety of makes and models. These covers work very well at protecting your air conditioner during the off season and when not in use.

Clean

Try to keep your appliances clean. That buildup of dust, dirt and grime in the coils or your refrigerator could be having a negative effect on the appliance’s performance. Clean those coils regularly in order to keep your refrigerator in good working order. The same is true for your dryer. Make sure to regularly clean the lint trap in between dryer loads so that it does not get clogged up with lint. Air conditioners also run much better when they receive a regular cleaning and the filter is replaced on time.

Avoid Over Use

This tip may not apply to all appliances, as some appliances are meant to run continuously. However, if you have an air conditioner or space heater that does not need to stay running all the time, give it a break when you are not going to be home. You will save energy as well as wear and tear on your appliances.

Follow Instructions

Be sure to follow cleaning instructions. While it is important to keep appliances clean, make sure that you do not use the wrong chemicals or cleaning methods. Look in your appliance’s instruction manual to find the best methods and proper cleaning products to use when cleaning each particular appliance.

Use Properly

Use your appliances properly, and only for their intended use. This may seem obvious, but appliances are broken every day due to misuse. People can accidentally cause fires while trying to use an oven as a home heating source. It is vitally important to follow the instruction manual and use your appliances properly. Proper usage will help to ensure that your appliances stay in great shape and last for as long as possible.

By following these simple tips, you can keep your appliances in great condition so they will last longer and save you money.

  1. Thanks for the great tips here. My wife and I just moved and got new appliances (which are much nicer than our old ones!) and we want to make sure we get as much life out of them as possible. I like what you said about getting a cover for the AC unit; our winters can get harsh and we don’t need it during that period anyway. I don’t imagine that tons of rain is that good for it. I’ll put your advice to good use!
