Ten Things You Need to Know During Your Home Relocation

Before you buy a new home or relocate to a new area, there are many things you need to think about. You’ll need to consider schools, crime rates; medical care and neighborhood activities in order make the best decisions for yourself and your family.  Read on to learn the ten things you need to know to ensure a smooth transition during your home relocation.

Before moving to a new area and home, research the area you want to live in. Learn about the economic conditions of the city, population rates, crime rates, and home values. You want an area that is on a growth trend. Look for areas that have neighborhoods that match your personal taste. You may want an area with many young families if you have children or an “over 55” neighborhood if you are searching for a home for retirement.

  1. One of the ten things you need to know during your home relocation if you have children is information about the school systems in your new city. School performance and amenities vary greatly from one school system to another.  Take time to speak with parents about their experiences with different school systems.  Check out performance ratings, articles and whatever other information you can gather. Narrow down your choice of school systems will automatically limit the neighborhoods you can live in.
  2. Look for areas with appreciating property values where homes are selling consistently. This provides the best return on your investment. If you have to move again, you have a better chance of selling your home quickly at a good price.
  3. Research tax rates for the areas you are considering. Many residential areas on the upswing have special tax abatement incentives. You benefit from buying in an area with tax incentives as long as the area is economically stable and meets your other needs.  You also need tax information to understand how much house you can afford.
  4. If both of you need to work to afford the move, research the job market. How easy or difficult will it be for one or both partners to find work?  Will the job market be a good fit with your work skills?  Can you earn enough to support the lifestyle you want?
  5. Check out the social and cultural life of the city where you are moving.  Does the area provide a stimulating cultural environment?  Is the social fabric of the city or town a good fit for your family?  If your family is multi-cultural,will you be warmly welcomed into the neighborhood and the city?   Is there a variety of entertainment – music, dance, drama and sports – available to meet the needs of each family member?  These are all important questions to ensure your family will be comfortable and satisfied with their new surroundings.
  6. When you move, it generally means changing health care providers.  Finding a good doctor is important. Many insurance plans limit your choices, but normally you can still choose from several different providers. Ask your realtor for a recommendation, check out suggestions from co-workers or friends who live in the area, and check the Better Business Bureau and professional medical associations in the area.
  7. Another one of the ten things you need to know during your relocation is the crime rate for your new city or town. What types of crimes are most common, and what areas are most prone to criminal activity?   If you have children, be diligent in checking out drug activity in the city, the schools and in the residential areas you are contemplating moving to.
  8. If animals are a part of your family, check out local kennels, daycare facilities, vets and local problems like ticks.  Work with your vet to prepare your pets with the correct vaccinations and paperwork.  This ensures a smooth transition for all family members.
  9. Once you decide where you are moving, investigate moving companies to find the best deals and the safest way to move your belongings to your new area and home. Compare prices and services. Learn how to pack your belongings correctly, or have the moving company pack for you. Poorly packed boxes result in damaged goods. Make the transition easy by properly packing and marking all boxes so they can be accurately identified and placed in the right rooms of your new home.
  10.  Before you move, set up bank accounts in your new city before closing out old accounts.  This makes financial transactions easier when you first arrive.  Make sure you update all of your accounts (bank, credit card, utilities) with your new address information and with updated bank account information (if necessary) to ensure nothing gets lost during the transition and that all old bills get paid in full.

By following these ten things you need to know during your home relocation, you make informed choices and have a plan to make the transition as smooth and painless as possible.  Prepare a checklist with all of the things you need to do, and check them off as you accomplish each step. A project plan helps you stay on track, keeps you focused and avoids serious oversights.
