What Have Been The Patio Design Trends For 2014?

With 2015 well and truly on the horizon, we have decided to take a look back at some of the patio design trends that really came into their own this year. This is probably due to the fact that designers see outdoor space as integral to the overall design of the home. We don’t see any of these trends falling out of favour anytime soon, so if you are interested in building a patio or giving your current one a new look, we are sure that you will find this list helpful!

  • Casual Dining
After the rise of outdoor kitchens a few years ago, many people have started to accompany this with a casual dining area. We are getting rid of the traditional patio table and chairs in favour of a more casual and comfortable arrangement. One design trend that has certainly been on the rise is tables that are placed at “chat (standing) height” and surrounded by club chairs that provide easy seating.

  • Contemporary Furniture
These days, you may have noticed that outdoor furniture is looking a lot more like the pieces you find inside the home. If you have a contemporary patio designs, you can complement this with the addition of contemporary furniture. Think sculpted backs, low-to-the-ground seating, deep cushions and oversized sectionals. Many people are turning these spaces into a place where they can relax and casually entertain.

  • High Tech
If you are quite techno-savvy and enjoy playing around with technology, you might be pleased to learn that even your patio can go tech. Imagine being able to control your fire pit, shade covering, water fountain and outdoor lighting with your smart phone – it’s now possible! Some people are also choosing to install televisions and sound systems as a part of the design; this will increase your living space twofold.
  • Water Wins
Water features (such as fountains, ponds and walls) add a sense of elegance and relaxation to patio designs. Many people find the sounds of flowing water to be quite peaceful and energizing, not to forget that they are also quite aesthetically pleasing. If you don’t have a lot of space to work with, it is possible to get your hands on self-contained or portable fountains and urns – simply plug in and go!
  • Wildlife Lover
Regardless of whether you live on the outskirts of the city or somewhere in the country, it has become quite popular for patios to include a gift for the birds and bees in the area. You can help these pollinators out by providing butterfly- and bee-friendly flowers (such as cosmos, milkweed and marigolds) or simple bird feeders. You will also find that this attracts the wildlife of the area to your property.

It is important to remember that we have only scraped the tip of the iceberg when it comes to 2014’s patio design trends. More people, for example, are choosing to line their outdoor spaces with shrubbery (a trend that had fallen out of popularity in recent years). Fire pits have been popular for the last few years and there is no sign that this will wane anytime soon. So, have you been inspired to do something about your daggy patio in 2015?
