Small children can sometimes reach the doorknob on your outside doors, but they cannot reach the deadbolt and locks that are higher up on the door. Some children like to get up in the middle of the night and wander around. To keep your children safe and keep them in your home, you need to lock your doors and keep your children secure.
Protect Sleepwalkers
According to the National Sleep Foundation, it is estimated that anywhere from one to 15 percent of the American population sleepwalks. As of 2014, that means that anywhere from 3,139,000 to 47,085,000 Americans get up in the middle of the night and walk in their sleep. By locking the doors of your home, you are preventing sleepwalking family members from getting outside the home and harming themselves.
Enforce Curfews
Some parents find it effective to enforce curfews on their teenagers by locking the doors after hours and forcing the children to wake the parents to get into the house. This could prove to be an effective way to prevent your teenager from staying out late.
Keeping Out The Elements
For many homes, locking the deadbolt on an outside door means having the door shut as tightly as it can be shut and protecting the home from the elements.
Locking your doors at night may have become a habit, but you may not know why. Once you understand the crucial reason for locking your doors at night, you will make it your goal to lock up on a regular basis before going to bed.
