morning sicknessMorning sickness is among the common signs and symptoms of pregnancy especially during the early part of pregnancy.  A vast majority of pregnant women experience this symptom during the first three months of their pregnancy while others take this as confirmation of their pregnant state in the absence of their regular menstrual period.

Morning sickness is medically termed as nausea gravidarum affecting majority of pregnant women and is usually experienced during the early hours of the day and gradually stop as the day progresses although this symptom of pregnancy may occur at any time of the day.  Morning sickness however, can also be seen in women undergoing hormone replacement therapy as this condition is related to hormone estrogen when there is an increase in its level.  Episode of this condition can be mild or can be induced although not severe enough to cause metabolic derangementThe onset of this condition usually begins on the 6th week of pregnancy which may last until the 12th week of gestation.

What are the causes of morning sickness?

No exact cause has been identified for the condition of morning sickness although there are factors considered to be contributing for the episode and such factor may include:

Human chorionic gonadotropin of HCG is believed to stimulate the maternal ovaries causing an increase in estrogen subsequently resulting to nausea.  HCG however has no clear indication of its relation to nausea and vomiting in the morning although has been considered due to its timing in peak as this hormone rapidly increases during the first few weeks of pregnancy.

Estrogen hormone rapidly increases a hundred folds during the early weeks of pregnancy that increase in level has been implicated to the cause of sickness although there is no consistent finding with comparison to the level of bilirubin.

Progesterone in its increase level is vital in preventing early childbirth by relaxing the uterine muscle.  The drawback however is that it may relax the stomach and intestine that can cause gastroesophageal reflux disease and excessive stomach acid secretion which can cause the sickness.

Sensitivity to odors can heighten and may over stimulate the triggers of nausea.

Increased bilirubin level can also cause the sickness as a result of increase in the liver enzyme.

Morning sickness during pregnancy may not be bothersome that can take away the joys of being pregnant.  There are ways to relieve that sickness while making it easy for expectant mother to go through the whole nine months without so much burden and discomfort.
